Spinal Cord Injuries Awareness Day is an annual event where charities supporting those with Spinal Cord injuries (SCI), such as the Spinal Cord Association (SIA) work together to increase awareness and raise the profile of spinal cord injuries.
What is a spinal cord injury?
The spinal cord is a portion of the central nervous system enclosed in the vertebral column, consisting of nerve cells and bundles of nerves connecting all parts of the body to the brain.
If damaged it can cause disruption from the brain to the rest of the body resulting in loss of movement or sensation and can affect functions like breathing, blood pressure, bladder and bowel control.
Life can radically change for anyone who is affected by a SCI and consequences for the injured person and their family can be severe. Sufferers often find themselves requiring medical care, rehabilitation, home adaptations and advice on their financial situation.
What help is out there?
The SIA is the leading national user-led spinal cord injuries charity which offers valuable support for those affected by spinal cord injuries and their families.
It has over 10,000 members and over 50% of the SIA staff themselves have a SCI. Because of this, they understand the difficulties involved in having SCI and are above to provide unique insight, support, information, guidance and practice advice.
The SIA are keen to ensure that all people who suffer an SCI have the legal advice they need following an accident. Spinal cord injury, unlike some other types of personal injury, is a very specialised area. SIA panel solicitors must provide evidence that that they have qualified staff who have experience in handling cases involving these complex injuries. Each panel firm must uphold the SIA Code of Conduct, which is backed by the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers. A copy of the Code is available on the SIA website.
Spencers Solicitors have been supporting the SIA as a corporate member for over five years. We are also proud to be recognised as SIA panel solicitors and to champion the important work the SIA continue to do.
Spencers Solicitors are the only Solicitors in the Chesterfield area on the SIA panel.
