Danielle Wright - Head of Employment and HR Services
This month we are delighted to welcome Danielle to our team here at Spencers.
Danielle is an experienced employment law solicitor, helping employers and employees with their employment and HR matters across a wide range of sectors.
We sat down with Danielle to find out a bit more about her path to law…
What is your day-to-day role here at Spencers?
I oversee the employment law department and manage a case load. This includes Claimant and Respondent work. I assess claims in terms of prospects of success and supervise the team with their own caseloads and ensure our service standards are high. I advise on all areas of employment law and HR, provide employment documents, review, draft and amend contracts and handbooks, negotiate and sign of settlement agreements and prepare cases and represent clients in the employment tribunal.
What made you want to choose a career in law?
It was my A level law teacher. He was awesome and believed in me, which made all the difference. I decided to pursue a career in law and haven’t looked back!
What is your legal experience?
Having completed a law degree I went on to study the Legal Practice Course at the College of Law Chester. I was lucky enough to secure a legal role on completion of my studies and this was as an employment law consultant back in 2003. I specialised in employment law for 10 years and decided to enrol as a Graduate of CILEx and complete further studies to qualify as a Fellow Legal Executive in 2016. I then sat my Practical Skills Course and later enrolled as a Solicitor in November 2017.
Why did you choose employment law as your specialism?
It was genuinely an area of law I enjoyed studying and knowing that it is something that has a huge impact on people and businesses in their everyday lives makes it very rewarding. It is challenging and constantly evolving and I love that.
What are the most common challenges you come up against in your work?
I would say the biggest challenge is explaining the law and why it doesn’t work in the client’s favour despite this seeming very unfair.
Have you found any cases particularly hard on an emotional level?
Yes, helping some friends and family members with Tribunal claims. This can be challenging.
What do you find the most interesting part of your job?
Meeting and talking to a variety of people and businesses. I work with people in all locations and at any level. Every case is different.
What are your interests outside of work?
I enjoy listening to music, watching cooking programmes and taking my sons to football.
And finally…if you weren’t a solicitor, what do you think you would be doing?
To be honest, I always wanted to be a vet until I studied law, so I would probably be doing that!
