Common Laser Surgery Issues

Laser surgery consists of a high-powered beam of light, known as intense pulsed light (IPL) being concentrated on the area to be treated. Laser surgery should only be carried out by an experienced or qualified professional (although, somewhat remarkably, this treatment can be performed by anyone, ever since the government deregulated the cosmetic use of laser and IPL equipment in 2010).

Some laser treatments can leave the treated area sensitive or red for days after the treatment. There are different frequencies that each type of laser works best at, depending on the area it is being used on and the desired results. Your doctor should inform you of the risks before you have anything done. Sometimes however the settings of the laser equipment are fixed too high, causing injury. Some of the common issues that can arise are:

• Blindness
• Damaged cornea
• Damage to the skin pigment
• Scarring
• Burns and blistering

Laser Eye Surgery Claims

Laser eye surgery is not always guaranteed to work and in some cases you may be left short-sighted. The procedure involves reshaping the cornea which corrects any focusing issues that you have. The cornea is like a transparent window at the front of your eye and can be easily damaged or scarred.

Currently in the UK, there are no formal regulations on who can carry out non-surgical laser treatments such as hair removal and wrinkle treatment. There are also no regulations as to where the laser treatment has to be carried out. Some local authorities require that the premises must be licensed.

All doctors who perform laser eye surgery should be registered with the General Medical Council as a legal requirement.

The Royal College of Ophthalmologists recommends that doctors who carry out eye surgery should have undergone additional specialist training although, this is not a legal requirement.

Laser Hair Removal Claims

High intense laser beams are aimed near the base of the hair follicle to prevent or slow down the growth. It is paramount that the correct type of laser be used on your skin with the correct frequency setting. A patch test is usually carried out around 6-8 weeks before any treatment takes place. This is not always the case as the procedure can be carried out anywhere, although some local authorities require that the premises have a license.
