• Chesterfield Cylinders – manufacturers of gas cylinders and based on Derby Road in Chesterfield, very close to the current Spencers Solicitors offices.
• Bryan Donkins – an engineering firm formed in Bermondsey, London in 1803 but moved to Chesterfield in 1902. In 1997 the company was split into four divisions which have since been either renamed, bought out or dissolved.
• Sterling Tubes – operated on the same site as Bryan Donkins, which was demolished in the early 2000s and is now a B&Q, some of the railway lines used on the site can still be seen.
• Biwater Pipes – The Clay Cross Company was founded by the famous railway pioneer George Stephenson in 1837, and became the biggest employer in Clay Cross. Biwater bought the business in 1984 and manufactured iron pipes for export to Europe. It employed 700 people in Clay Cross when in 1998 it was sold to Saint-Gobain through its UK subsidiary Stanton plc, who then closed the site within six months.
• Dema Glass - were one of the biggest glassware suppliers in the country by the mid-1980s but were taken over by Coloroll in 1987. Neighbouring business GB Glass bought Coloroll just two years later and despite glassware manufacturing still continuing on huge sites where Chesterfield FC have their new ground, the business went into receivership in 2000 and the factory closed in 2001.
• Stanton and Staveley Pipes - has origins dating back to 1788 and eventually became part of the British Steel Corporation, but the foundry at Clay Cross was another business bought out by Saint-Gobain, this time in the early 2000s.
• Markham and Co - was an ironworks and steel works company situated near to the town centre on Markham Road, and which merged with a Sheffield business to become Davy Markham and the Chesterfield works closed in 1998.
• Robinsons Packaging - active in Chesterfield since 1839 the packaging business is still headquartered in Chesterfield.
