I think that we would all agree that with everyone leading such busy lives its so much easier to jump into our cars in a morning or afternoon to carry out the school run.
This year the “Walk to School Week” is taking place from the 20-24 May, with thousands of schools taking part in the week long event in an attempt to get more pupils active and reduce congestion on the roads, and to get children to think about the pollution that travelling to school in a car makes on the environment.
A generation ago, 70% of us walked to school but now it’s less than half that amount. The campaign is a five day challenge to walk to school and help teach children about road safety as well as the health benefits that comes with more exercise.
- Walking with your children can be fun and interesting, and together you can discuss the local environment and improve their communication skills along the way.
- Walking can make children feel calmer and happier, it also helps with concentration and their focus within the classroom.
- It also helps children learn about road safety
Walking to and from school will also help improve the environment. Emissions from cars can be very harmful and the effects of global warming are already happening.
So, let’s all help by doing our bit for our children and the environment - put away your car keys and take part in this year’s Walk to School Week 2019!!
